Your status is not indicated by the cards in your wallet, but by what you do with them.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, I do sorta like the way my Capital One credit card looks.  Here is why I had to think for a long time to find something I like about Capital One:

Beginning in 1998 I ran significant bi-weekly veterinary expenses through my Capital One card for several years and paid the balance in full each month.  After I asked for a lower interest rate Capital One set my interest rate at 5.9% because "I see you do use the card."  In 2009 (I was unemployed for almost a year during the Great Recession) when I had to carry a balance and my Capital One card was nearly maxed out ($10,500 limit), Capital One raised my interest rate to 16.4% (if I remember correctly, and I think I do).  At the time I only had one credit card (Capital One) and Capital One apparently thought they had me trapped.  I was eventually able to pay off the Capital One balance before the higher interest rate went into effect.

I would have understood and wouldn't have had hard feelings if instead, Capital One had "balance chased" me by decreasing my credit limit every time I made a payment on the balance, but I will never forget what Capital One tried I sto do to me.

Back in 2008/2009 many banks were raising the interest rates on credit cards which caused some folks to default. I know, it happened to me and it wasn't Capital One.

I suspect that many on this forum have an '08-'09 story.  In our case, it was PNC balance-chasing our HELOC, even though property values in our neighborhood remained stable.  Happily, not long after, we were able to clear up that nastiness with a refi, and never have to do business with that friendly institution again (and, in the bargain, learned the benefit of paying cash or going without -- or, at least, have the cash in the bank before you put a purchase on a card Smiley Wink).

Or maybe they should make an unobtanium card. Now that would truly be something. Smiley Happy

If you don't have a installment loan reporting..get one by going with a shared secured loan. That will raise your scores and build a more well rounded file. Other than that, not much else you need to add right now.

Since OP is in college he may have student loans, if this is the case, no need for installment loan.

I understand wanting validation for having worked hard and put effort into ones finances or any project for that matter. Feeling like you've done something that sets you apart is not necessarily "uppidy" in my opinion, but could be perceived that way at first glance. Without getting too philosiphical, it seems to me the you could potentially benefit from finding a new project to excel in. Perhaps it's time to look at career, health or philanthropy goals that you could attain. Reaching those goals may have the pay off you are looking for while having the added benefit of improving your status.

My 2 cents.

Best of luck

Say I have a limit of $2,000 and I spend $1,000 at once. I pay the balance off in full the day before the credit card company reports my activity to the credit bureaus.

Is my utilization rate 0% or 50%?

Assuming it posts before usually the "due date" then it would be 0%

Point taken, I figured his or her scores would be a bit higher with an installment loan reporting. My step daughter had 6 months of history with 3 CCs and a SSL. Her scores were all in the 730 to 760 range at that time. After 12 months she was in the 770 range FICO 8 TU.

Few perks people left out. Mastercard luxury hotel & resorts portfolio – complimentary room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out upon availability, daily breakfast for two and preferred amenities at more than 2000+ properties around the globe.+
Flight seats upgrades.
Car, Air, Cruise and Vacation Packages – special savings and upgrades
These are normally benefits you receive with a annual fee card.
Your only missing - global entry reimbursements, no foreign fees, chip n pin because the card still chip and sign, airport lounge and the metal prestige to be called the Blackcard. Plus 495 fee but your will get 100 travel credit. Citi You get 2% cash back. I was lucky enough to get my annual fee waived twice. Now looking forward to getting my upgrade in the mail. Thinking about canceling my luxury black card. I love my Chase Sapphire Resever. They just announced 2 more transfer partners.

Re: AMEX Optima Oasis -- Any RECENT experience?

Hey Guys,

This is my first time posting in the forum, though I have been reading multiple threads for a little while now.  I thought I would jump in and offer my experience with the American Express Optima card and maybe answer some questions for someone since (as everyone here knows) there is VERY little information on the Optima Card online and even within American Express.

So, as has been the case for everyone else here I had an AMEX card and it eventually went to collections.  Over the course of a few years I (of course) heard from American Express to pay the balance of the card.  I never responded, until last month (January, 2018).  Somehow or other I heard about the Optima Oasis card (I think it was this forum), but anyway when I did finally decide to call in and make the payment I mentioned the Optima Card and the Collection Agency (Global Collections) informed me that by paying the balance in full I would be eligible for an Optima Card.   I got the standard commentary, once the payment is made and processed I would be mailed a paper application that would need to be completed and mailed back in within 30 days and at that time I would get an Optima card.

So, the timeline:

1/2/18 - Called Global Collections to make the payment

1/3/18 - Payment was debited from my account

1/11/18 - Received confirmation letter stating once payment was made I would receive an application in the mail for an American Express Optima Card (note: the letter was dated 1/3/18, so it took about a week to receive the letter)

1/30/18 - Received Optima Form (hardly an application lol)

1/31/18 - Mailed Optima Application in to American Express

2/7/18 - Got an Equifax notification that American Express initiated a hard inquiry

2/7/18 - Checked the American Express application status site to check on the status of my account: APPROVED.

So, I should receive the card within a week or so.  All in all, the process went as it should have gone.  I know it can be a little nerve racking waiting for this paper application and then not being able to find ANY information on the card online or even from AMEX as no one really seems to know about the program.

I did not read through this whole thread but I get what the OP is saying. I dropped Capital One like a bad habbit this year as well. This is after being with them for years. In my mind, they just dont offer anything great and their rates are often uncompetitive.

In addition to what the OP stated, their APR cash back rate for "high interest savings accounts" is dead last and not competitive. Its been like this for years.

I jumped from Capital One to Goldman Sachs (which has been great so far) for Savings and went to other companies credit cards and have not looked back. I recommend anyone who has a Capital One product to shop around and see if there is a better offering. I can saftely bet there is.

There are 'super exclusive' credit cards out there, like the Amex Centurion card. The problem with these cards is you pay for the services with an annual fee ($2,000 for the Centurion), because how else can the issuer pay for the perks? But since you could also take the annual fee and just buy the things and services you specifically want, in many cases for less money, it's questionable whether these cards are a good deal. That is why few people pay for them. A lot of people who hold these cards probably do hold them mainly to impress people when they take the card out of their wallet (doubtless, not all).

I think that’s somewhat true. But since it’s for the extremely wealthy, I think the other benifit is huge credit limits or none at all. So they can do all their spending on one card. Once you get rich enough I think cashback isn’t that important for many. But do it all concierge services becomes a huge benifit. Having someone book and do everything for one is common in their lives. The fees are to help pay for these people’s salaries lol.
