Re: How to convince my friend to start using CCs?

Forget about convincing him to get a CC. That is the least of his worries.

Convince him to stop sending half his paycheck to some fat dude who sits behind a computer overseas. Convince him to help up more around the house. Convince him to pay back the debt he has to Chase. Convince him to open some kind of savings account. Getting a CC to save $3 a month on gas isn't going to do anything for him.

But to actually answer your question. Try showing him the awards and signup bonuses you get. Everyone likes money, and if they see they can get more money by using a CC, they might.

It's really nice to see you concerned with your friend's well-being! Given that description, I'd be a little uncertain about his possibilities of getting a credit card because it would seem that he's a risky individual. He'd have to start with a secured credit card, which requires you to pay a deposit equal to your credit limit such that if you don't pay on time, they'll take it from there. If you have a credit card that gives cash back for gas, you might consider adding him as an authorized user and explaining that he'll owe you money when he uses it, but maybe he and his dad will be more comfortable since it's a close friend and not a bank involved. Just a thought though, good luck to him!

I actually requested it the day of, but was denied. This might not be the case for others though, as Amex doesn't like to give me CLIs ever Smiley Tongue

You left out the rewards the cards offer. The Venture card is very similar to the Arrival Plus and right now offers 50,000 points, which is 10K points better than the Arrival Plus. After the minimum spend, the Venture card returns $560, which isn't too bad. As others have noted, Capital One is also a good entry-level card provider and option for people rebuilding their credit. But you are right Cap One is not in the same league as Amex or Chase. I've never had a Citi card but it seems to me Citi doesn't offer anything exciting right now.

I can kind of understand both sides of this, but I'm leaning 90/10 towards the customer. Why would Chase or any bank give someone a $5000 limit and not let them use it? If they didn't like the OP spending $2200, they should have given him less than $2200 on a limit. I get minimizing their risk, but they're the ones who gave him the large limit just a few weeks ago.

Cap One has the simplest mobile app, straight forward cards with no rotating categories (which works well for busy people), the pre-approvals are actually solid, and a vast majority of apps are instant (whether approved or denied). There's no calling each day to check for 30 day, 15 day, or 7-10 day messages. No waiting anxiously to see what a starting CL is. My QS is now seeing less spend since adding BCE and Cash+ but it still gets spend as I can literally log into the app and make a payment in under 30 seconds from the time I picked my phone up.

At least with CO there's none of the funny business like a relative is enduring with Chase or my own little ordeal with Citi. My relative apped for the Amazon Prime card after receiving multiple emails and prompts on Amazon to app for the card with fixed apr showing. With 740 scores, 50k salary, 3.5 AAoA, 2 inq's in last 12 months, no lates ever... been sitting on 15 day msg for over a week now. Things like this turn people off.

on a whole I agree but chase is rapid spend sensitive on new accounts and if the op charged business items that can also be frowned upon.  anything could have tipped the scales, nobody will ever know which is why I like the pif and pray approach

Amex Plat vs PRG?

I have looked at the Amex website and tried to compare the two several hundred times, and i'm just mind boggled.  I know the Platinum is more of a travel card, and the 550AF...   the PRG is that ugly gold color, but lower AF and spend bonus as well which i like.

I would love to hear the opinions of you that already have one or both for your impressions on them.

My Amex cust svc experience has been god aweful, altho i hear once you get upto PRG or Platinum the agents a helpful and not just talking heads repeating a script that is basically useless...   *stricken from the record*

Just reiterating what the previous poster said. Almost any card reader that’s a Verifone brand will have contactless payment.

Was just in Spain in August and 95% of the vendors there (even the hole in the wall kebab shops) had the same little Verifone machine. Most of the vendors weren’t even aware that this function worked until I held my phone over the machine and it accepted the payment.

I exclusively used a Visa card and was never denied from anywhere that accepted credit. But a few machines did require a pin.

For the few situations that require cash, I’d recommend getting the free Charles Schwab brokerage and checking account if you don’t have one already. They reimburse any ATM fees that you may be charged, and naturally have no FTF.

Enjoy your trip.

It seems you already answered your question as far as prg vs plat. IF you travel frequently, the plat af will pay for its self. If you don’t, it’s probably not going to be a card that wields positive rewards. You will more than likely be in the red with the AF.

As for CS, broken English and Bob....let’s remember to be FSR. This forum utilized by many demographics and we want to continue to be inclusive, welcome, friendly to all without producing an hostile environment (whether it’s our intention or not). ☺️

I see that Citi Costco visa now has no FTF. I have the Barclay Uber, Citi Costco, and C1 QS all with no FTF. Will exchange rates be the same across the board as they are all visa cards or does it depend on the bank? When I used my C1 QS (before I had the other cards) they always charged me at the current rate of exchange and not marked up higher. Does anyone know this for sure, I would like to know before using the cards abroad. Thank you!!

I used my AMEX Delta Gold and Barclays Uber aborad before and I was charged the current rate of exchange both the times. I'm not sure about Citi Costco though. Im my opinion, it depends on the bank, but I'm guessing most of them use current exchange rates.

Thanks Smiley Happy I was reading other threads and there seemed to be conflicting info. I think popular opinion is that the issuer (visa, amex, mastercard) handles the exchange rate and not the bank. I just wanted to be sure though haha. By the way, seeing that you have the Uber card do you know if the 3% is for all Travel related purchases or are there restrictions?

The Uber 3% category is not for travel.  It is specifically for airfare and hotels.  Other travel expenses like car rentals, train tickets, highway tolls, etc. are not included.

Thanks for specifying. Do you know if it would work on an orbitz.com purchase? Does that count as Travel Agency?

The wording on the terms for the Uber card are pretty specific.  The 3% return is for airfare and hotels.  It is not a generic travel category.  Other expenses like car rentals are not included.

Lots of other cards are more specific than just the MCC for categorizing purchases.  Some offer rewards on just airfare or even just one vendor.  Never assume that something is included in a bonus category unless the terms actually say so.
