Citi Secured Card: Early Graduation?

$

Next month will be my 12th month anniversary with my Citi Secured Card. I applied for it last March at the same time I got my first credit card, a Discover secured that graduated ~5 months ago and recently got an increase, and a Capital One Journey card that was upgraded to a QuickSilver last week. I also took on my first car loan back in October, and my credit score has been gradually growing along with my credit file.

On the Citi site, it says the security depost (I went low at $200) would be held in an account for 18 months. Is early graduation ever possible though? I've charge a few things to it each month just to use it. Every statement reports about $10-$30 on it, and then I pay it in full. My hope is that this card will grow too.

- Does anyone have any knowledge about early graduation?

- Is there a specific card I'll be upgraded to, or can I choose?

- Also, should I expect an increase at the same time? My two other credit cards now have a combined limit of $3,100. I can't do much with $200 Smiley Happy

They will not do early graduation. Its an 18mo secured card program.  At the end of the 18mo, the card will graduate automatically to the DP (Diamond Preferred), and you should see an CLI at that time.

@TheCreditGame Usually yeah. This one's inherited his mother's stubbornness though. That said I've been giving him way more ground than normal lately so it's not entirely unexpected.

I was really, really tempted to tell him his protests were upsetting the ghosts & use my phone to enable the "spooky" setting on the smart lights - changes colors, flickers like a candle and randomly turns them on or off - but that would have been going too far. Even for me. Maybe next time lol

Then just keep it at 5%, do not let go above 9% or pay it down to 0 again, both will hurt your FICO score.

After 6 months of intentional no use I finally generated an offer, 0% until October 2019 on all purchases! I also picked up a $500 SP CLI. I used it heavily about $10k after first getting it in May 2017 then completely stopped. They rejected me for SP CLIs every month and they only ever gave me offers for 3x miles on dining and that was only for one month, I declined that offer in hopes they would step up there game a bit. Glad to say it has earned a spot back in my wallet for now. So another DP to show that no use is the best use for getting an offer.

Not sure about Chase, they seem to love me in terms of approvals and high limits but I still have no offers from them despite putting more than $40k on my card with them last year.

I understand everyone is trying to help me, and thank you I can’t explain how much it means to me that someone would take out 3 minuets just to try and help me make sense of everything. in so many ways I’m ignorant in every way. I’m young and very new to credit. I’m sorry if I wasn’t able to convey my situation in the best way but, in my defense I’m buzzing in anxiety/ nerves because I’m going to lose my dream card I been hoping to get since I started my credit. I want nothing more than to resolve everything and keep my shiny metal card.

The situation is,
1: I will not have all of the funds until tomorrow afternoonish. I have about $500 in my primary checking right now. I get paid on Friday and I’m receiving the money owed from my boss tomorrow when the deposit clears.
:2 I can’t setup a online chase account, I’ve tried to do it but it would not let me. I tried doing it again and it won’t let me. Can’t access online at all since day one.
:3 My chase checking only has sub $100 in it.
:4 The only option I have at all is wake up tomorrow pray to God it’s deposited by 9am and pay as much as I can.

I appreciate everyone’s help and advice. But I’m in a unique situation. I will abide by the advice to my best ability because I do not want to lose this card.

Edit: I realize this post looks really snarky and full of sarcasm but honestly it’s not. I promise. Just trying my best to explain.

no judgement or lecture so don't take it as such.  you said you are young.  this is a dream card.  don't ever make a charge that you cannot cover with cash on the spot and never be late.  there is it, everything you need to know about credit.  good luck, report back.

Hopefully a lesson learned.

The desire to quickly achieve the signup bonus without the cash on hand to pay the bill might cost you a card you feel is a status symbol.

Imagine if this was not an anonymous site and when you used that prestigious card everyone knew you didn't have any money in the bank.

You should be fine to apply directly through the offer and not wait until June. It's likely this offer is time-limited. When you get into the application page and open up the price terms, if you see the APR being a fixed number, then it should be reasonably solid.

It also somehow depends on your current credit status to see if it makes sense to get another card with Chase at the same time. If you don't mind the annual fee and spend a lot on travel, then the CSP may be good for you. But you still want to consider what other cards you currently have and their limit, and how many new accounts you have in the most recent 2 years.

The first thing you always do when you get your card is setup online access and a pay from account.

After that, raise the spending ever so slowly if your profile doesn't support it.

Good to know. I was already planning to stop using it after meeting the SUB. But with my luck they'll probably just reduce my credit limit instead of sending me those offers.

I'm not sure why you're surprised. Barclays is a pathetic card issuer consisting of mostly co-brand cards, and a few cards they keep yanking and reviving a year or so later (Ring and Cash Forward come to mind). About the only good, competitive cards they have are Jet Blue and Uber.

People here already know Barclays is pathetic, especially compared to AMEX who is known to overnight cards for free without one asking, or offers cards that actually have some travel benefits to them.

Well, Uber is currently a very competitive card, 4% on dining with no AF.  And in the past Barclays had the Sallie Mae.   And Amex has the Plenti!

Barclays hate here isn't really related to card selection (Citi's is pretty bad as well) but more to the AA experienced by some members of the forum, presumably because of the atypical nature of the behavior of the credit lovers here.

But I do agree about their charge for overnighting a new credit card is bad.   (Although needing the overnighting of a new, rather than replacement, card is very much a first world issue!)

AMEX no longer has the Plenti card, but they do have four Delta cards (two that are actually useful), SPG, and a way to transfer points from MR earning cards (plenty of those) to partners, including those not even listed on their partner page (Ritz Carlton and Marriott).

Citi has competitive cards... The Prestige, TY Premier, combined with the AT&T Access are pretty good. The Double Cash and Costco cards are pretty good cards as well. The rest of them are kinda "meh" though, I agree.

I didn't realize you could still app for it. I was considering getting this card myself but all link seems to redirect to the BCE now unless there's some unknown method to get app to populate.

According to DoC TODAY, they finally closed apps for this card after not marketing it for months (years?):

When i'm logged in, it still shows and the app button is for that card when i click it.    not sure why DoC thinks its not working

Discover can approve you without their standard 0% intro APR offer.  You still get Cash Back Match though.

$25 cash increments are a problem, but plane ticket increments aren't?

And if not redeeming for plane tickets, why use ED/EDP?

Hotels such as MR >> SPG >> Marriott >> (potentially Ritz Carlton).

I was just looking up Marriott hotels and it was 512/night over five nights or 180,000 points in the Bahamas.

$512/night * 5 nights * maybe an extra 15% for taxes and fees = $2,944 cash

$2,944 / 180,000 = 1.6 cpp. Nothing amazing for MRs. Good for Marriott points, though! My last Cat 9 stay was in 2015, but it was only like $180/night with tax.

(For people unfamiliar with Marriott, the fifth night on an award stay is free).

If someone wants 180,000 Marriott points, there are better options:

Starwood: At 3x/6x, you earn much faster. EDP wins on grocery spend, but that's capped at $6k per year (27000 MRs).

Marriott/Ritz: 1x is nothing special, but good for 2x/5x categories and credit towards Platinum.

And the point remains that (apart from occasional "topping off" mile transfers) small MR redemptions are inefficient.

The total included taxes and fees. I fast forwarded to the "total price" page before typing up the total.

If you spend $60,000 on the SPG card, you get $2,800 in rewards or whatever I said earlier, which is 4.6 cpp.

If you transfer 3:1 to SPG and then 1:3 to Marriott, the deal isn't terrible as long as you're using the EDP for only groceries and gas and then perhaps a PRG for restaurants and flights (to keep the annual fee reasonable).

How to convince my friend to start using CCs?

My friend is 21 years old. He does drive and works at Wendy's. He had some problems with Chase before. Negative balance on his checking account that he's never paid.I think he owes $2-5k to Chase. Don't know all details. He told me he has problems even getting a checking account with other banks ( after Chase tried to chase him).
His financial situation is also not so good. He lives with parents and help them to pay the bills, but he is always late because he is wiring money overseas to some "girlfriends" he met on FB. At least half of his pay check. Can't help with that and also don't know all details.
Now because he is driving and in deep debt - I tried to explain him to get a CC for gas savings because he pays around $2.9/gallon. He said no and was very stubborn about it. I think his dad mentioned that living in credit is bad, so now he is very scared. Or maybe he just knows that he wont get approved for any credit card. So how can I convince my old friend to get at least one CC for gas and start saving a little bit? He spends around $100/mo on gas and I told him it's almost like using your debit card or cash. Just pay in full and save $5-10/mo. He drives a lot. Putting $50-120/year in your pocket isn't good enough?!

+1 for you! I was really really hoping someone would catch the Fringe reference. Probably my favorite sci-fi show of all time, behind the first 4 seasons of LOST that is. The final season was definitely a bit weird but it was still good, and a hell of a lot better than the final 2 seasons is lost. Like Stephen King, endings are not always JJ Abrams strong point

Oh yes, I'm a big 'ole nerd... I got the reference right away!

That was such a 'smart' show... it really made you think.  Especially the second universe stuff; so much would have been identical but for a small change that made a big difference in so many cases.

I like JJ Abrams, just keep him away from Star Trek.  Smiley Surprised
